Perfect little UPS for router backup…WITH a few modifications! – For years I have used older or larger versions of Schneider UPS. This one is just what I wanted to run my 20 watt router during outage. However, I am not satisfied with a UPS that runs only an hour or two. True that most outages here last only a few minutes so that is great, but I live in hurricane country and need something that will last through my nightly TV viewing at least. The battery in the small unit I purchased CAN BE REPLACED or expanded easily if you have the skills and secure storage location. You can find one on Amazon or eBay for $16 or so. Is that so much?? Let’s face it, you can’t expect little AGM batteries to last forever, esp. if they cycle, but I find the Mighty Max brand bought here on Amazon has an amazing life and number of cycles. i even use one in my Prius which outlasts the OEM x 4. To open the case there are four little Phillips head screws on bottom.. The connections are the standard for this type battery, and you just slip off and install a new battery. See pics. I just clipped off the connectors and wired the unit to two of the OLD Mighty Max 34ah AGM batteries I had collecting dust. In parallel, of course, to maintain the same 12 volts. Obviously if you mistakenly wire them in series you will double the volts and damage the unit most likely. So for no extra money I turned this $49 UPS into one that is better than a $200 UPS for my small load. Of course, I would never try to put a bigger load on it and don’t advise overloading the inverter in this unit. Don’t do this if you are not a good electrician or have kids or animals or other potential accident victims around and don’t have secure storage. But I have used similar for years and works fine and lasts a long time. The expanded UPS in my picture is safely in the attic, and the Mighty Max AGM batteries I use won’t leak and are stable. I will sell the unused little battery that came with it on eBay to someone who needs a replacement. Replacement frequency all depends on time, temperature, how many cycles the unit experiences, depth of discharge etc. Some users may get a longer life than others.

Battery backup with modest demand – 425 VA will suffice for electronics with modest demand. I’d advise a higher e rating and capacity for heavy demand such as powering an electric motor or complex electronics with a significant draw. Any UPS can supply power. The only question is how long do you need to supply power before the battery runs down. Remember the VA refers to volts and amperes. The higher the demand in either (or both) of these, the faster the battery will discharge.

Good value – This APC UPS Battery Backup Surge Protector was purchased 7/2022 and has protected the modem and router in my home network. We had a few brownouts during this time period due to two hurricanes and unknown events.

Wish it had a user replaceable battery – I’ve had this UPS for 5 years to keep my voice modem working during power outages so I can still use the phone and internet during the outage and not have to wait for everything to reboot when power is restored, especially for brief outages that won’t drain the battery. It’s small enough that it fits on a shelf I built between the studs in my utility room where I have my modem. I use the wall mounting to secure it to the wall so it can’t accidently fall off. After 5 years trouble free I decided I should replace it as I don’t know how much longer the battery will last and I’d rather replace it before the end of life warning starts going off. My only complaint about this unit is that the battery is not user replaceable, so I had to buy a whole new unit. As the price has gone up about 50% since I bought the first one five years ago I’m even more disappointed that I can’t just replace the battery myself. I was able to find YouTube videos showing how to replace the battery, so I’ll probably keep the old one and try to swap in a new battery when the battery on this one nears it’s end of life.
