Constant reboots – I really wanted to get this product to work but sadly I am stuck in constant reboots…

Was worth compared to other options – I found this was a better option than the mini PCs I tried first available on Amazon. To me I now find the extra cost to purchase this hardware a better investment. The Protectli vault runs considerably cooler than the mini PCs I purchased.

Well built sturdy device – pfSense installed flawlessly. Followed instructions from the manufacturer precisely. Then researched and applied settings recommended by my VPN service. Looked through the OpenVPN documentation and tried some additional advice from there. I had disappointing results with each of the configs. I’ve been reading on the pfSense site that they would be requiring AES-NI crypto support and this box has it. I thought with hardware crypto that the CPU did not need to be particularly powerful and would still have high speed through OpenVPN. Not the case. I have been using pfSense on an old HTPC build without AES-NI for a few years. pfSense did not detect it anyway on the AMD A8 processor it has. That gives me my full 200 Mb/s through the VPN which is the bandwidth I pay my ISP for. The Protecli box at best did a bit over 40 Mb/s. If you have a slower connection give it a try. If you’re looking for fast speeds over OpenVPN figure something else out. Not sure why the pfSense folks are insisting on hardware AES-NI since it doesn’t seem to be all that effective. I have “middle” level technical skills. If you know a ton more and post another review please be kind. I’m not claiming to be an expert.

Much better choice vs Mini PCs – I setup the Sophos Home firewall on a Mini PC I had purchased here on Amazon; it quickly failed. This is a much better choice for a firewall. There are directions on how to install Sophos and they point out the WAN/LAN ports are reversed with it.

Nice little box with an appropriate price point – My 5 star rating is all about what you get for the money with this machine.

It works, no problems yet – Bought this for a pfsense firewall build. Note that there are pfsense alternatives that may swap the ethernet ports in the config, but pfsense gets the Lan and Wan ports defined properly out of the box. Handles blocking rules and gigabit ethernet with no problems so far. Doesn’t eat much power, just quietly does its job.
